Hello from the Careers Advisers

I, along with my boss, the inimitable Martyn Drage, make up the Careers Team here at the ICMA Centre.  I’ll blog every so often about things that I’ve seen, heard or done that you might find fairly interesting – like QI, but FI.

A few weeks ago I was at a meeting of Financial Sector graduate recruiters, and they were talking about the things that let most interviewees down:

1- A lack of research and/or understanding of the company/role/sector;

2- An inability to describe, and give evidence for, what makes them a good candidate;

3- A lack of critical analysis – the ability to look at something clearly & logically & to draw conclusions from it.

So there you have it – 1 & 2 are about preparation – and number 3 is why people study at University, so there shouldn’t be anything holding them back, other than personal motivation and time management.  Unless it’s the individuals’ communication skills that are letting them down……
